A graduate of Virginia Tech (’79), John Cardwell holds graduate degrees from Marshall University in Educational Administration (M.A) and Educational Leadership (Ed.S.) A retired career college administrator his career started at Bluefield State College in 1979, first as Director of Campus Activities, then Director of Admissions, Director of Enrollment Management, Interim Vice-President for Student Affairs, Executive Director of Enrollment Management and culminating as the Vice-President for Student Affairs and Enrollment Management (retired September 2013).
He has been active in state and national organizations in student affairs and enrollment management, including serving as President of both the West Virginia Student Affairs Personnel Association and the West Virginia Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, a member of the national AACRAO SPEEDE (Electronic Transmission of College Records) Committee and has made numerous presentations to both state and national groups. He served a six year term as West Virginia’s State representative to ACT. John also served on the state’s Student Financial Aid Advisory Board.
His commitment to helping young people achieve their full potential, both through education and personal development, has been a driving force throughout his career, both at the College and in local organizations. He was actively involved with local schools and organizations, serving on the School Improvement Councils for Brushfork Elementary School and Bluefield High School, on the board of the East River Soccer Association, and a past President of the Bluefield Soccer Boosters and the Bluefield Area Little League Association.
John and his wife Wendy live on the family farm in Concord, Virginia . They have six children and five grandchildren. John continues to be active in community activities serving on several foundations and boards. He is very active in conservation and wildlife management.
